External aging
Factors other than your genes accelerate skin aging.
Lifestyle and habits carry more impact on why skin damage
becomes prematurely visible as skin ages.
Your diet and nutrition play a big part in the appearance of
your skin. You need a lifetime of antioxidants to combat the
free radical damage caused by the sun. Exercise which increases
circulation and muscle tone also affects the appearance of your
skin. The type of skin care products and your use of them (or
the lack of use) also affect the appearance of your skin. That
nasty word STRESS is perhaps the biggest contributor, other
than the sun, to the lines and wrinkles in your face. Stress
produces those facial expressions that eventually become
permanent creases and wrinkles. Better laugh lines than frown
lines.
Smoking
Cigarette smoking does not only cause harm to the body
internally but externally as well. This is most pronounced with
the condition of the skin. Nicotine intake causes changes in
the body that speeds up the break down of skin cells, among
other harmful effects.
It is a common finding that individuals who have been
smokers for at least a decade look comparably older than those
who do not smoke. In addition to wrinkles, yellowish
discoloration of the skin has been observed in smokers.
However, the good news is that those who have given up smoking
show improvements in their skin condition shortly after
quitting.
Smoking produces its very own particular set of wrinkles.
The repetitive pursed mouth to inhale and exhale smoke causes
lip lines - those little creases all around your lips that can
cause lipstick to bleed. Let’s not forget the frown lines and
wrinkles around the eyes due to squinting because of the smoke.
Smoke is irritating to your eyes and they will automatically
squint to protect themselves.
