Pets, they pull at our heart strings, make us tear our hair out, make us laugh until we cry, and always love us unconditionally. They can behave like unruly 3 year old children.  They must be given a task or two to occupy their mind.  And just like all the other members of our family, they can fall prey to illness and aging. It is as vital to that animal as it is to you, to get your exercise and if it takes the guilt of not walking your dog to get you moving---so be it.

Perhaps in the wild in a time very long ago, it was survival of the fittest and the weak and old animals were food for some other animal.  Now we invest increasingly large amounts of money in the health of our pets. Just as in human health, prevention is the key. 

Some breeds have a genetic predisposition to certain illnesses and joint problems.  On the other hand, if you own a dog you must be aware that chocolate can kill him or her.  And much as we may like to share our food with that big-eyed beggar, that is a cruel joke on his health.
